Chapter 4 – Potential Allies and Enemies

“You have mechanical elevators?” Tristan asked as he folded his arms. Balin smiled and pressed the button for the top floor. Rose sighed as she rubbed her arms back and forth. It wasn’t like her to feel nervous, but nothing has felt right since they got to the city. Cameron took a spot in the corner furthest from them, leaning up against the wall and the diamond banister as if he had been there before. Tristan was immediately suspicious. If Cameron was feeling calm and confident, there was always reason to worry.

“This place is impressive,” Cameron said. “I dare say it is what Musgrave would strive for if we had the resources.”

“The elves would make powerful allies,” Balin said. “It would do you well not to upset them.”

“To gain powerful allies,” Tristan said, “it often requires great sacrifice or a show of strength. You know that we have neither, and I assume, your superiors know as well. Why should we bother, beyond offering servitude or a willingness to be experimented on?”

“You’re the leader here,” Balin said. “You figure it out. I’m simply the messenger.”

“I didn’t know the word ‘spy’ had different designations,” Cameron said.

Balin chuckled under his breath as he stared down at the carpeted floor. “To be able to live in a city such as this, I am willing to take on an undesirable role. It’s not a matter of right and wrong. It’s what you’re willing to live with.”

“At the expense of others,” Tristan said.

“You haven’t been tested thoroughly yet, so let’s not pretend as if your pedestal is justified. The world is vast, and you have seen but a speck of dust amongst the granules of sand. Everyone has people they want to protect, even if that person is themselves. Do you honestly want me to believe that you would fight for all people, regardless of position, species or values? Please. You know nothing.”

“I remind him every day,” Cameron muttered.

“Enough!” Tristan snapped, glancing back at Cameron. “I get it. I’m a joke to you. But someone has to strive for a better tomorrow. If we all give into our selfish desires, then what? It all turns to chaos.”

“Chaos isn’t so bad,” Balin said.

“What do you hope to get out of this meeting?” Tristan asked Cameron.

Cameron took a deep breath and shook his head. “I’m ready to observe first. See who the elves are. You?”

“I’ll do whatever is in the best interest of our group and the three communities.”

“See?” Balin said as the elevator bell rung, signifying they were on the top floor. “Some are more valuable than others.”

Balin took the lead and stepped out onto the polished wood paneled floor, waxed and pristine. The room was bathed in light, as the walls were large windows, and the room was massive, as if it was the vestibule before a cathedral’s worship hall. A desk stood at the far end but there was no chair. A tall, lanky man with long, fine black hair looked out over the city, his eyes taking in the sun without restraint.
